Are home school, private school, and charter school students eligible for membership in the AYO program?
Membership in the AYO program is open to all interested orchestra students from schools throughout the central Texas area – public school, private school, charter school, and home school – and will be determined by the audition process. Students from schools with orchestra programs must be a member in good standing in their school orchestra.
Is membership in the AYO program only for string players, or can woodwind, brass, and percussion players become members of AYO?
There are seven orchestras within the AYO program, the top two of which – Symphony and Philharmonic – are full orchestras during the spring semester. Although string players must audition to become members of the AYO program, woodwind, brass, and percussion players are selected/invited for AYO membership based upon the results of the Texas Music Educators Association (TMEA) Region Orchestra auditions. Woodwind, brass, and percussion players from schools with band programs must be members in good standing in their school band.
String players auditioning for the AYO program are to prepare music of their own choice that best demonstrates a maximum level of ability. Scales and sightreading will also be included in the audition process. Please review the document entitled AYO Audition Requirements.

Does the string audition music for the AYO program require accompaniment?
Is there an opportunity for current string players to advance to a higher level orchestra in the AYO program?
AYO string auditions for advancement will be held only once per year at the end of the AYO season during the month of May.
Is there an opportunity for current woodwind, brass, and percussion members in the Philharmonic Orchestra to advance to the Symphony Orchestra?
Current woodwind, brass, and percussion members in the Philharmonic Orchestra will be advanced to the Symphony Orchestra for the following season if they qualify for the TMEA Region High School Orchestra and if a vacancy exists in the corresponding woodwind, brass, or percussion section.
There are seven orchestras within the AYO program. String students grade third through grade twelve may audition and participate in the AYO program. Woodwind, brass, and percussion students in grades six through twelve are eligible to participate in the AYO program (Symphony and Philharmonic Orchestras) by invitation only.
There is not an AYO parent organization, but parents, families, and friends of AYO members are welcome to attend and observe AYO rehearsals and are encouraged to attend AYO concerts, which are free and open to the public.
