2017 – 2018 AYO Audition Requirements
Students must be entering the third grade when school begins in the fall to audition for Concertante, Intermezzo, and Camerata Orchestras.  
Students must be in the sixth or seventh grade and have one semester of playing experience to audition for the Prelude Orchestra. Prelude Orchestra meets during the spring semester only.  
Students must be entering the sixth grade or higher in the fall to audition for the Sinfonietta and Philharmonic Orchestra and entering the ninth grade or higher in the fall to audition for the Symphony Orchestra.

General requirements for all students:
  • Posture and bow hold should reflect an approach to the instrument that will allow consistent technical progress and result in accurate intonation
  • Playing a solo that is too difficult will generally lower an audition score
  • Solos should be performed without accompaniment
  • Sight reading will be selected by the judge(s) at the audition

PRELUDE
  • Focus for this ensemble will be for students who have been playing ½ - 1 year
  • Audition requirements to be announced at a later date

Concertante
Scales, one quarter note per bow, Quarter=90
Violin: One octave A Major, D Major
Viola: One octave D Major, G Major
Cello: One octave D Major, G Major
Bass: One octave D Major
Reading: Can name open strings and names of notes used in present repertoire; Can tap simple, notated rhythm (half, quarter, eighth units at sight
Solo piece should be comparable to end of Suzuki book 1 level. Piece should include slurs and varied rhythm patterns. 



Intermezzo
        Scales, 2-eighth note slurs per bow, Quarter=80
Violin: One octave: A Major, D Major, Two octave: G Major
Viola: One octave D Major, G Major: Two octave: C Major
Cello: One octave: D Major, G Major; Two octave: C Major
Bass: One octave: D Major, G Major, C Major
        Note reading: eighth-notes, quarter notes, half-notes, dotted half-notes, whole notes, and dotted quarter-notes
        Solo piece should be comparable to end of Suzuki book 2 level



Camerata
Scales, slur 4-eighth notes per bow, Quarter=80
Violin: One octave: C Major, F Major, D Major, Two octave: G Major, A Major, D Major
Viola: One octave: F Major, Bb Major, Two octave: C Major, D Major, G Major
Cello: One octave: F Major, Bb Major, Two octave: C Major, D Major, G Major
Bass: ½ position one octave F Major and Bb Major; 1st position one octave G Major
All Students must demonstrate shifting
Sight reading: Can sight read at the middle of Suzuki book 1 level
Solo piece should be comparable to end of Suzuki book 2 or Suzuki book 3 level



Sinfonietta
Scales: Tempo steady and memorized; hook dotted quarter/eighth note rhythm per bow, Quarter=120
Violin: Two octave: Bb Major, D Major (must include shift), a melodic minor
Viola: Two octave: Eb Major, G Major (must include shift), c melodic minor
Cello: Two octave: Eb Major, G Major (must include shift), d melodic minor
Bass: One octave: A Major, C Major, g melodic minor; Two octave F Major
Techniques:
Tunes own instrument
Use vibrato while performing
Shifts consistently with smooth shifting motion
   Violin/Viola: Shifts into 3rd position
   Cello: Shifts into 2nd and 4th positions
   Bass: Shifts into 2nd and 3rd positions
Performs with independent fingers
Sight reading: Can sight read at Book 2 level, including compound meter
Solo piece should be comparable to Suzuki Book 4 level



Philharmonic
Scales: Tempo steady and memorized; eighth notes, one note per bow
Violin: Two octave: E Major, e melodic minor, Three octave G Major
Viola: Two octave A Major, a melodic minor, Three octave C Major
Cello: Two octave A Major, a melodic minor, Three octave C Major
Bass: Three octave G Major, Two octave a melodic minor, A Major
Techniques:
Tunes own instrument
Uses vibrato in musical contexts
Shifts consistently with smooth shifting motion, thumb and hand moving together and fingers in a functional position
    Violin/Viola: Shifts into 2nd, 3rd and 5th positions
    Cello: Shifts into 2nd, 3rd, 4th positions and extensions; can also read notes in tenor clef
    Bass: Shifts into 2nd, 3rd, and 4th positions
Performs with independent fingers
Sight reading: Can sight read at the middle of Suzuki Book 3 level or UIL Class 3 solo
Solo piece should be comparable to a Suzuki Book 5 Level or UIL Class 2 solo



Symphony
Scales and arpeggios: Tempo steady and memorized, sixteenth notes, one per bow
Violin: Three octave: A Major, D Major, g melodic minor
Viola: Three octave: D Major, Eb Major, c melodic minor
Cello: Three octave: D Major, F Major, c melodic minor
Bass: Two octave: Bb Major, D Major, d melodic minor
Techniques:
Plays with consistently accurate intonation and resonant tone quality
Shifts consistently with smooth shifting motion in all positions
Uses vibrato in musical contexts and can control speed, width and intensity
Demonstrates mastery of spiccato, ricochet and other advanced bowing techniques
Cello: Can alternate between tenor and bass clef and play in thumb position
Bass: Can Read in treble clef and play in thumb position
Sight reading: Can sight read UIL Class 2 solo
Fall audition: Selected excerpt(s) from TMEA All-State etudes; cuts to be posted on the AYO website under Chair Tests
Spring audition: Solo piece should be comparable to a UIL Class 1 solo
